High-Speed Running: The Queen of Hamstring Rehab 👑

If you’ve had a hamstring strain, you’re not alone.

Hamstring injuries are one of the most common problems in running and field sports. They’re frustrating, painful—and far too easy to re-injure if not properly rehabbed. Many athletes work hard on strength exercises like Nordic curls or deadlifts but still find themselves back on the sidelines a few weeks later.

Why? Because strength alone isn’t enough. The key piece that often gets missed?

High-speed running (HSR)—and it should be at the centre of your recovery, not an afterthought.

Why is High-Speed Running So Important?

When you sprint, your hamstrings are pushed to their limits. It places the huge mechanical and neuromuscular load on the hamstrings, especially during the late swing phase - where most injuries occur.

So if your rehab doesn’t include sprinting, your body simply won’t be ready for the real thing when you return to sport.

Research shows sprinting activates your hamstrings more than any gym-based exercise. While gym work builds strength, only sprinting prepares your body for the speed, timing, and force needed on the field.

What Should a Complete Hamstring Rehab Look Like?

To stay strong and injury-free, a complete hamstring rehab plan should combine:

  • Gym-based strengthening (e.g., Nordics, Barbell hip thrusts, seated hamstring curls)

  • Pelvic and trunk coordination

  • Plyometrics

  • Progressive sprint exposure

This means building back up from 60–70% effort to full-speed sprints (95% or more) before you're cleared to play again.

In Short:

  • Strength is your foundation.

  • But high-speed running is the queen.

Not sprinting = not ready.  Respect the queen 👑.
